July 4th 2012

We woke up at 6 am on the 4th of July.  We were heading to the parade in downtown Edmond and if you want a good spot you gotta get there early.  So the all of the men packed up the lawn chairs, blankets, and coolers and took off in search of the perfect parade watching spot.  I finished making
"pigs in a blanket,"  and loading up cups with juice.  We called the guys when were on our way to find out where they set up.

Mom found two little firecrackers to walk her speed all the way from the car to our spot.  Check out the girls visors, Mom made them the night before.  They turned out so cute!

We had about an hour to kill till the parade started, so we all snacked on muffins and piggies in a blanket,

 Our whole crew!

The girls loved watching and waving to everyone that went by.

The parade was over.  It was time to go home, rest a little then get dinner ready.  We had the Henson's over for BBQ sandwiches, creamed corn, cole slaw, cold beer and a pitcher of sangria.   After dinner we piled in the truck to go see fireworks at the UCO campus.

Fireworks didn't start till 10.  Dad played football with the kids to help pass the time.

Time for the show.  It was a beautiful display!!!  We didn't get home till midnight.  It was a LONG day filled with lots of fun memories.  So glad mom and dad could spend it with us!

4th ofJuly, Fireworks Edition

One year ago we took the kids to see their first professional fireworks display. You can read about it here. They were not sure what to expect in the beginning, but ended up really liking it. Well this year when it came time for the 4th they were all about seeing the fireworks. Being new to Oklahoma we asked around, "where were the best fireworks?" Turns out the best show was right here in Edmond on the UCO campus just a few miles from the house. And they did NOT disappoint. They were spectacular!!!

We had to get there a couple of hours before the show began to secure a good viewing spot. We packed a cooler with drinks, a bag with snacks and a few footballs to help entertain the kiddos and we were off.

Tyson and Paul threw the football back and forth for a while.

And of course Emmy did not want to be left out of that fun......

Paul gave her a few tips and she held her own.

Nice form Em!

Meanwhile Sam and I felt it was important to stay hydrated with our Malibu/pineapple orange juice concoction and take pictures of Paul and the kids.

It was almost time and they were beginning to get a little restless.
See what I mean?

Happy 4th of July!!!! Already looking forward to next year!!!

A New Lucas Family Tradition

Our July 4th morning started pretty early when my alarm went off at 6:30. I put a pot of coffee on and got myself ready before I woke up the rest of the group. My plan was to make "pigs in a blanket" to take with us to the parade than pack up a small cooler of drinks. Mission accomplished! I woke the kids up around 7:15 and they were dressed and ready to go within 10 minutes. They were so excited for their first 4th of July parade. The parade started at 9, so I figured if we got there by 8:15 we should be able to find a good spot. Well, was I in for a surprise......most of Edmond was already there and from the looks they had been there since 7ish. We managed to find a place to park and walk a few blocks down Broadway and even found a pretty good spot on the corner. We set up our chairs, got out our breakfast and handed out the apple juice, let the festivities begin!

Tyson was so cute, he had brought his camera too and couldn't wait to snap some pics. Hmmm, wonder who he gets that habit from?
A good time a was had by all! And it actually stayed pretty overcast most of the parade which helped to keep the temperature from getting above 150 degrees. On the way home Tyson told us, "we should do this every 4th of July!" Buddy I think that's an excellent idea!

First Fireworks Show

My kids have never been out past 9:30. So the decision to take them to see a fireworks display that didn't begin till 9:00 was a BIG decision. I felt that this year they were both old enough to not only enjoy them but not be scared of the noise. And of course, there was the late bedtime factor. We loaded up a bag of snacks, a small cooler with Kool-Aid drinks and a few bottled waters and then I covered the kids in Off (it is South Texas) grabbed some lawn chairs and we were one our way to start a family tradition. Well, to both mine and Paul's surprise the kids did great and we had a lot of fun. They really enjoyed the show. Tyson knew what firecrackers were but Emmy had no idea, she kept asking when she was "gonna see the cracker?" I guess she was expecting to see this giant Saltine cracker in the sky. Sometimes you just never really know what's going on in her little head . Anyway, they loved the whole experience of sitting outside with 3000 other people they didn't know and hanging out in lawn chairs on the grass. The kids played on the playground and Tyson and Paul threw the football till it was time for the show to begin. Good times!!!

We got home a little before 11 and Em had been asleep since 10:30 in the car, carried her in asleep, changed her and put her in her bed, and she didn't wake up till the next morning.

Happy 4th of July

She's kind of a free spirit..........

Emmy was really showing off her "princess" dance moves as she likes to call them. Lots of twirls, lots of leaps, and lots of jumping. She definitely dances to her own beat and wasn't afraid to show off in front of a bunch of strangers.

Did I mention there wasn't any music playing?
